A place of solitude, serenity and beautiful scenery - the Vale of Kashmir attracted both the maharajas and the mendicants, the monks and the mullahs. Here, the spiritual mingles with the real. The lovely river Jhelum originates in the valley, making its flood plains a very fertile land, complimented by a climate thats suits every living being. This far-a-way place resting on the scapula of the mighty Himalayas, makes the visitor discover their soul, health and happiness.

 
     
Gulmarg, literally, the 'meadow of flowers,' is known for its ski resort hill-station, and a breath-taking landscape. Its scenic spots are so picture perfect, that many popular Bollywood movies were shot on its flower-strewn grassy meadows. Nearby, nestled along the length of its valley is a wildlife sanctuary. Gulmarg welcomes you with an enchanting ride, when the road from Tangmarg snakes itself up the hill spur, unfolding the magnificent views of the pine and fir forests down below. The snap view of the picturesque hilly country is an unforgetable experience.
     
 
Pahalgam - the land of sheperds, is a place where one of world's finest sheeps and lambs, and saffrons are cultivated. Situate on the bank of the river, Pahalgam is a qaint little village and a base for horse safaris and trek trails. The valley surrounding Pahalgam is a catchment that feeds the sensous Lidder river. Bare-footed Hindu pilgrims start their three day trek from here to visit the famous Amarnath caves where an ice lingam dedicated to Lord Shiva is worshipped. Close by, on the upper reaches is the Overa - Aru Wildlife Reserve
 
       
 
Sonmarg: Around 87 kilometres, north of Srinagar, the 'meadow of gold' - Son-marg, offers a variety of activities for the adventure enthusiasts. Angling, trekking, mountaineering and horse riding expeditions can be taken up from this base village. It is also the road head to trek to the famous Amarnath Caves, and the gateway to the Ladakh region. The thick pine forest and glades around Sonmarg is an exciting sojourn for nature lovers.
     
 
  A preferred Tour Plan
Day One : Arrive at Srinagar (1730 mtrs), registration and unpack at the houseboat; know your house boat, and the family which owns it. Evening at leisure; enjoy the specially cooked Kashmiri dish for dinner.

Day Two : Trip to Pahalgaum. On the way, visit the ancient ruins of Avantipura, the holy towns of Anantnag, Vernag, Mutton. At Pahalgam (2100 mtrs), go on horse-rides to nearby meadows on hill slopes, and valley view points. walk through the trails into pine forest country. Back to houseboat.

Day Three : After early breakfast, visit the Kashmir museum at Srinagar, and then proceed to Gulmarg. Enjoy the Gondola (cable car) ride up to the skiing slope of Khilanmarg (2700 mtrs). Here, one can take a short 1 hour course to learn skiing on the slopes below. Visit the shooting spots of films starring the Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz duo fame. Go horse-riding on trails. There is an excellent golf-course and a recently built ice-rink for the winter games competition. Back to house-boat.

Day Four : A day for a cool drive to the famous Wular lake, the largest fresh water lake in India. Wintering birds, especially waders fly down here in large flocks. On the way, visit the revered temples of Keer Bhawani. Go boating at Mansbahal Lake. (Optional excursion to Dachigam National Park - the best place to see the rare himalayan snow leopards, the himalayan brown bear, and the rare and endangered Kashmiri stag dear, also called the Hangul).

Day Five : Excursion to the dizzy heights of Sonmarg - the meadow of gold. Sonmarg at an altitude of 3000 metres is the main gateway to the exotic Himalayan tribal region of Ladakh. Here too, you can take a short horse-safari trek to visit a nearby glacier. This place is the centre for adventure in Kashmir. Trekking and angling is a major sport favoured by foreign tourists.

Day Six : The final day at Kashmir is reserved for a short visit to the Mughal Gardens; the old Shankaracharya temple at a hill top; shikara - a broad country boat with a canopy - rides at Dal Lake; and later in the afternoon, go shopping to buy the famous papier-mache handicrafts and other artworks, the renowned Kashmiri shawls, and cricket bats!. Farewell dinner.

Day Seven : Depart to Jammu\Delhi and onward destinations
