Wildlife and Habitats in a Nutshell

The wildlife of India is perhaps, more amazing in its diversity than its people. In India there are 504 wildlife sanctuaries and 92 National Parks, 13 Biosphere reserves, 26 world heritage sites out of which, 9 are natural heritage sites.

20 per cent of the Indian land mass is under forest cover. A land unit, having a green cover of more than 10 per cent (like in open and scrub vegetation type) and 40 per cent (like in mixed-dense vegetation type) is considered a forest: (FSI, Dehradun).
Note: The vegetation includes grass lands, open scrub, and plantation forests.
